why are there distortions wneh welding? | |
Answers:
From: Welder Gary
distortions are caused be expansion and contraction, which is caused be the heating and cooling process. when metal is heated to the plastic and melting stage the metal first expands and then as it cools it contracts. welding causes distortion because of the unequal heating and cooling of the metal from one side of the metal to the other side of the metal. on the welding side of the weldment the metal first expands and forces the metal to bend away from the weld and then during the cooling stage to metal contracts and pulls back toward the weld side of the metal. weld distortion can be minimized by preheating the weldment or selective placement and timing of the welds.
