Does a mig welding unit "wear out"? | |
I have a Millermatic 130 and I am using fluxcored wire with no sheilding gas. I got this unit used. But although I have an arc and deposit plenty of metal, I am getting no fusion or penetration at all and nothing holds. I have tried it on 1/8"' auto sheet metal and 1/4" rebar and no weld is occurring. Does the unit "wear out" of amperage? I have tried the highest amperage with a low feed speed to try to get more heat. Or am I doing something else wrong? The metal is ground clean and the grounding clamp is close to the weld. When I am done I can take a hammer and just knock off the weld metal - no adherance at all. Please advise.......thanks.

boy this could be from several causes. i would first check the easy stuff. make sure the miller is disconnect from electrical power. tighten all the electrical connections. then the wire drive wheels on the wire feed, they should be clean and adjusted correctly. make sure you using fluxcore wire (non fluxcore will cause your problem). you good also have bad fluxcore wire, change the wire and try again (this problem is not as rare has you might think).
