welding a metal tank whike full of gas

i have heard of someone welding a crack in a metal gas tank while it was full of gas. not a veicle gas tank, but a large tank. this was done safely as it takes oxogen to ignite the gas and while welding the crack on the outside of the tank...which was leaking gas...it was welded and no explosion took place. does this sound feesible? if so, please give details of physics involved.
