these are all text book descriptions of certain welding processes. smaw- is shielded metal arc welding, more commonly know as " stick " welding, fcaw- is flux core arc welding, used mainly in structural steel, and is wire fed. gmaw- is gas metal arc welding, which is commonly known as " mig " welding, used mainly for non-structural apllications.
