gmaw is also known as mig welding, your question is kind of vague, and i don't know what you are welding exactly but i'll try to help you out. i usually use about 24v for anything over 1/2" steel, 1/4" steel at about 20v. weld joint configuration and fit-up is everything, i also employ a steady counter-clockwise oscillation for extra penetration. hope this helps!

if you perform a gma weld using the "drag" or "backhand" technique, this will also help to ensure better penetration. it will also allow you to see the weld bead better for more reinforcement.
