Aluminum tig weld cracking | |
I am trying to weld 3/16" or 5mm 5356 aly an oblong shape 1.3/4" x 3" or 47mm x 80mm into the bottom of a boat with a TIG But as the weld cools i get a big rootline crack in it it didn't make any differance as to weather i do the down hand first or the overhead first or whether i back step the weld can any one help

it might depend on the quality of the aluminum that you are trying to weld, but it may depend on the rods you are using. Most aluminum rods have a small amount of magnesium in to help the aluminum flow, it might be worth trying to use aluminum rods with silicon in as this can help to bond poor quality aluminum. Thats about as much as i can help im afraid as i normally weld stainless steel.

Thanks Dave i have tryed just about every thing. And i did try a silicone in desperation. Silicone in boats is a no no as it will fizz out. what i did was dish the patch so as the weld shrank on the four sides it could take it out of dishing i also changed over to a MIG as they generaly supply more material in to the weld than the TIG this acomplished sealing up the hole in a very unprofesional way so there has to be a better way i will have to have another go at it in the not to distant future
