Probably iron welding is the most widely known welding type as it has been used for the longest period and is most widely used. Actually, many of you do not know that iron welding is not a one and identical process that is used all the time. In reality, all the welding specialties depend on the iron that is used for welding. This means what kind of heat it demands and the level of pressure.
The most important thing that does not depend on the iron used as it is important for all kinds of welding, is that the surface has to be really clean before you start iron welding. Otherwise there is no point of doing the welding as it will start to crack and it will break eventually. Thus, all materials have to be removed and thoroughly cleaned from the surface where the iron welding is about to begin.
About using iron welding to repair cracked castings: drilling a hole at both ends of the crack and grinding out to the end will prevent it from spreading forward. Iron welding should be start from the end of the crack as there the restraint is the biggest and then move towards the free end.
